Afterwards, I tried to make necklaces
of pomegranate seeds.
The juice spurted out, bright crimson,
and stained my fingers, then my mouth.

I didn't mind. The juice tasted of gardens
I had never seen, voluptuous
with myrtle, lemon, jasmine,
and alive with parrot's wings.

The pomegranate reminded me
that somewhere I had another home.

Here’s my letter to you today

The ones before I’d never written or typed on a sheet, I have, though, drilled the words through my head in memories of dreams. Every night I dread coming home and going to bed, the vortex that envelopes my being is dreadful, truly, when I’m out, I occupy myself to the fullest. Not a moment passes when my mind is not busy, could be twitter, or friends or a book or a café.

I hate being alone in my room and bed because inadvertently there’s no more energy to be spent and exhausted at five in the morning I pray that I drop off into a dreamless continuous sleep.

That hasn’t happened. What does happen is that the moment my head hits the pillow all the thoughts that are dormant amongst the feathers and fibers seep through my hair follicles and squirm into my mind, they creep slowly at first and soon they gain momentum until I lose consciousness into that pause that’s called sleep.

I wake and it’s only been an hour or two, I sleep and wake again, I read the latest news on twitter and sleep. Restless they sense my consciousness and burst into life! I close my eyes against their invasion but they come through every other orifice that affects my being they won’t leave me alone.

You appear, from nowhere, in a restaurant, a café, your car. You appear by my side, facing me, smiling. Your side grin, your eyebrows lift in emphasis, the words of an old Iraqi song smiles through your lips. And that’s about when the tears start to well. And by some miracle, even then I’m not allowed the pleasure of weeping. You distract me and everyone else distracts me oo. They won’t leave me alone these thoughts of you.

I need to go now to shower and get dressed... The shower is another alone region. The water droplets drum their way as other thoughts of you become them. You are now touching my hair and your hand on my face and your smile as if to say that we will always be together in the same place.

And the water pours not washing anything except my hair and body. Rivulets form and I remember your hand. In mine. And your lips kissing them, kissing my hand. Your face in my palm. “it’s not that you’re attractive, but oh my heart grew active, when you, came .. into… view.. I’ve got a crush on you… sweety pie..” Ella sing my woes, sing my smiles sing my soul. “Embrace me.. my sweet embraceable you..” Frankie, you’re friends.. do something.. NO! not “Domani.. “ it is your way and his way… it is no longer my way.. but perhaps eventually, it is the way that I have known all along. “I want a little sugar in bowl, I want a little sweetness down in my soul”

You wrote me a letter, and another one too.. I haven’t received the second one.. the thing is I want that letter. It was written for me, by me through you but for me therefore, it’s rightfully mine! Please give me my letter even if all that in it is lies. How naked can I be? More naked than under the shower, more naked than in the darkness of my soul, more naked than when one is dead.

Perhaps this is not a letter after all. I would never write you as I write this! This! What is this except a form of conversation with my mind? Sure you won’t read it! You won’t remember the address… this! A schizophrenia of thoughts jumbled to form in-coherent emotions in word format. This! How sad.

“it’s not that you’re attractive but oh my heart grew active..” Yes I know, but that exactly what got me the regular joe.

Gotta go juss joe! Remember? Remember joe? Remember what you said fifteen years ago in Montreal?

لم لا عربيات في سوق النخاسة

‪‫نداء الى السيد وليد الأبراهيم صاحب الـ (‬‫ م ب سي)‬‫ لمنع بث هذه الحلقة من برنامج نواعم لأنها تسيء للمرأة العراقية‬ ‫اذاعت قناة ال ام بي سي التلفزيونية اعلانا عن حلقة هذا الأسبوع يوم الأحد من برنامج كلام نواعم ، وموضوع الحلقة ( عراقيات في سوق النخاسة ) . وهذا ليس كلام نواعم أنما كلام ( شتائم ) فليس العراقيات وحدهن في سوق النخاسة . وليس البغاء تختص به العراقيات وحدهن انما هو موجود في جميع البلدان العربية واكثر من العراق بكثير ولانريد ان نذكر الحقائق لكنا نعتقد ان موضوع هذه الحلقة يسيء للمراة العراقية دون غيرها لذا نطالب من مسؤول المحطة الأستاذ وليد الأبراهيم منع بث هذه الحلقة لأن موضوعها باعتقادنا يكرس تفكيرا سيئا بالمرأة العراقية ويشوه سمعتها . واذا كن بعض العراقيات وقعن بايدي النخاسين ومارسن البغاء فليفتح التلفزيون ملف البغاء وتجارة الجنس في جميع البلدان العربية و ودول العالم الاخرى فسيرى انها ظاهرة تنشر في معظم هذه البلدان اضعاف اضعاف ما تتعرض له المرأة العراقية التي راحت وسائل اعلام عربية تظهرها بمظهر ( الرقاصة ) و( المومس ) من دون نساء العالم الذين يمارسن تجارة الجنس تحت ستار الصمت الأعلامي في بلدانهن . وليس في هذا البرنامج ( النواعم ) في حلقته الجديدة من جديد يذكر الا في سهم سيصيب قلب وشرف كل عراقي وكل عربي . الأخوات في هذه الحلقة لن يتحدثن عن موضوع المومسات العربيات في كل مكان وما أكثرهن ، ولأن التطرق الى أية جنسية بذاتها من بين دول عديدة قد يجر الويل على المقدمات ومخرجهن وربما على مالكي المحطة ، فلم يجدن الا العراقيات شريحة يتحدثن عنها فاخترن للبرنامج عنوان ( عراقيات في سوق النخاسة ) لأن العراق أصبح مستباحا لكل من هب ودب ولكل ناقص ذمة وضمير وطالب ثأر .. إن اصابعي لترتجف ومعها جسدي كله وانا اكتب هذه الكلمات مناديا ومستصرخا كل ضمير في العالم وكل شريف وشريفة في وطننا العربي وكل مسؤول في الحكومات العربية وكل المدافعات عن حقوق المرأة لوقف عرض هذه الحلقة المبتذلة في عنوانها . وأن ترحم الـ المرأة العراقية التي تتضرج بدمها الآن تحت وابل قنابل الأحتلال الامريكى والمتفجرات والمفخخات والتي فقدت ابنائها ومعيلها . واذا كانت ظروف محنة الأحتلال و وماخلفه من دمار وغدر الأهل والأشقاء بحجج العنصرية و الطائفية البغيضة قد جعلتها مخلوقا مرميا على قارعة الطريق . فهذا لايمنح وسائل الأعلام مثل ام بى سى لـها الحق في أن تجعلها مادة لموضوع البغاء والنخاسة لمجرد الاثارة دون أدراك للعاقب النفسية والثقافية لهذه الحلقة الخاصة بالعراقيات . إن وجود المومسات امر لا ينكر في كل زمان وكل مكان وان وجودهن في الوطن العربي امر لاشك فيه لكن لماذا يخصص الحديث عن العراقيات بالذات ، العراقيات اللائي عانين ما عانين وتحملن ما تحملن واساء البعض منهن ولست مما يمنح العذر للمسيئة منهن . لكنني لاأمنح العذر للفضائية االأعلامية وهي تسيء للعراقيات بالطريقة التي يتبناها برنامج كلام نواعم . لكنني اتساءل عن دول اخرى تصدر الدعارة وثانية تستقبلها وتهلل لها ويتردد الحديث في كل دولة عربية عن تلك الجنسية وامتيازاتها وتلك وشدة اغرائها لكن امام كل ذلك لا يتجرأ اي اعلامي مهما كانت قوته على الحديث عن الجنسية الفلانية او الفلانية او غيرها ولا تستطيع مقدمات البرنامج او معده ومخرجه التطرق لابناء جنسيتهم فهذا بالطبع ( عيب و ما يصحش ) فيتم اختيار العراقية ضحية لهذا الأستعراض التلفزيوني للبغاء وكأن البغاء لم يعدة موجودا عند غير العراق ..‬‫إن ما بوسعي ان اقوله أننا اذا ظافرنا الجهود فربما منعنا عرض هذه الحلقة متذكرين انها ليست المرة الأولى التي تمنع فيها ال‬ MBC‫ من عرض عمل ، فقد سبق ان نجحت جهود وتاثيرات وتدخلات من مسؤولين كبار في منع عرض مسلسل ( للخطايا ثمن ) لأن حوارا واحدا فيه اثار حفيظة البعض في وقته فكبف بحلقة جلها تسيء الى العراقيات والعربيات وكل المسلمات .لذلك نناشد كل المواقع العراقية ووسائل الأعلام العراقية الآن ان توجه رسائلها لمسؤولي المحطة قبل اذاعة هذه الحلقة اليوم الأحد . ‬

Dear all,
Sunny Sana'a smiles at u. The weather is gr8, we have stepped back in time! The bldgs ancient, people poor but so sweet. Our hotel is quaint, the room cute with candles around the walls. our window overlooks a tiny alley with telecom shops! The guys on the street said "hiiii"! It is a trip of days long gone by.

The smell of the place is so unique, there's fuel combustion mixed with the smell of fried food and wood ovens burning, the scent of a city is a strong part of its personality.

The sounds are just as distinct, one small window open and the whole street was in the room, mopeds whizzing past, motorbikes with broken exhausts filling the small space, cars in the distance, horns beeping every short while, the distant monotonous rhythmic drum beat from a stereo transforming the place into an open air concert and the untiring endless garble of children playing and talking as well as the youth on the street chatting and men gossiping. This was all in a room at Taj Talha
On our way we saw "the purple onion" cafeteria!
At al fakhir restaurant, our mouths are dancing with the fiery flavours of fa7ssa, selta, sa7awe8, 3eqdat la7am, 7aneet, cooked in ancient claypots from 100s of years ago and doused with the cool yoghurty flavour of shafoot and na8ee3 el zebeeb served in shimmering copper goblets with the yummy pull of the chewy khobz mulawa7

The intermission were two very short spelled power outages!

And the crowning glory of the honey drenched bent al sa7an culminated the meal washed down with gahwa gishr, shahi and shahi 7aleeb!

On our way back we passed by a resto called 3al hawa shawa!

Sana'a Day 2 (Thursday 12 Feb 2009)

After coming back from dinner we strained up six high flights to the mafrajah. Mafrajah being a balcony like area with a birds eye view of old Sana'a. Out breath out of strength, the view took away the last remnants of both! How can I describe going back in time. Soft orange glow of the street lights added to its mystery, I have only visited this place before in a dream I had many years ago.

Many blocks of varying heights with a multitude of windows filled the landscape, Huda called it a fairytale picture book in 3D.

I can go on for as long as we stood there and stared, but u still had to be there.

Tiredness from the trip and stairs saw us sleep like in a dream of a thousand years, that and the crisp coolness of the adorable room helped us stay longer in our cosy beds. Today we shall walk inshAllah.

We head twds the souk, old Sana'a and bab al yemeN, we walk into a live rendition of the yemeni part of global village, many scents, aromas and pungent odours invade the senses, it is an overcast day with dust and a cold breeze... The bookshops and the bead & silver sellers beckon - we walk thru the carpenters sector where all sorts of doors and windows are carved and each with a story to tell. Further on we meet our french friend who stays at the same hotel, Corrine directs us to the spice market, the heady smell of grains spelt, spice and flour spin their aromatic threads around us. What is really interesting is that women pass us and bless us... The men do too but that's expected. I saw an old beggar women whom we followed into a shop, the colours of her garbs were many different shades of pink brown & orange, that with a golden tulle mesh skirt and her scarf, she was beautiful in her poverty, as ugly as it is. Her blessings and prayers followed us around the souk & to our room.

We turned right & saw a fantastic alleyway full of materials shops... The one facing us had many different pieces with intricate embroidery, we sat at the shop chatting with Muthahhar & Ahmed. We spoke of Qat, daughters of officials, the origins of Arabs, the short attire of Adenites and again besides hamdani being best, the long Qat stalks from dar al hajjar are supreme! Apparently it is a skill to be able to 'store' Qat or give it a home in your cheeks ...(He gave me some to try, thatks a whole different story-i felt I was a cow or sheep) Some guys do both cheeks making them look like popeye but the avoid doing that in public as it may give them the evil eye!

We were tired, the air dry, and we hadn't anything to eat or drink for hours, we decided to head back for a cup of tea and some bread. On our way we saw gallery 1, it was lovely, Mohammed is a student of French at Sana'a Uni, a handsome face typical of mst yemeni men, a fine nose delicate features and hazel eyes, occassionally dulled by the effect of Qat, so we pick a couple of things to bargain for, as we sat there in walks a little boy of around 7, quiet, and solitary, when asked his name he only responded 3allawi. That was all he said for the rest of the time we were together. Then Fahad came in! He is 10 or 11, he asked in proper English "where r u from?" So I asked, where r u from and he replied "Eb"

We wanted to buy bread so Mohd said we must try the kodom, a whole wheat chewy do not unlike the egyptian bread served with foole.

It was hot right out of its furnace, we bid farewell to 3allawi first then after the hot dough we saluted Fahad.

Walking back we took a wrong turn which turned right! And saw three of the cutest fluffiest kittens scurrying into a crevice in the wall, even their kittens r shy!

As we reach our hotel we decide to discover the terrace of Daoud tourist hotel. The terrace of which we spent many moments in time observing it goings and comings through the broken wire mesh of our 1m squared window. We order 2 teas from dark skinned Adenite Sameer, who due to his city lifestyle in Aden seemed, in robust alpha male Sana'a, quite effeminate.

We came back to 'our place' as that's how it feels, the people in the neighbourhood, the hotel staff, even the streetwalkers, the all seem very familiar. We wash up, pray and head out with hermit-like abdul aziz to al fakhir for dinner.... We r starved! Well sort of.

Happy sat in abdulaziz's car we see the live bustling streets of Sana'a dance it's serpentine twirl of the Janbiya as we're carried thru them, cars intertwine with trucks and micro buses laden with San3anis of all different attires.

Abdulaziz spots a wedding celebration in a vacant lot formerly used by palestinian refugees. This lot looks similar to the ones in beirut and perhaps even cairo.

And they danced, rather meandered and twirled and shook their daggers (janbiyas) and wove thru, and twirled.. It was magnetic, the continuos drumbeats on metal and hide rising to a quick beat and then relaxing into a constant, and the daggers shake. They were in a world all of their own... What is so absolutely mesmerizing is when the groom joined and as a salutation they all joined and the line grew longer, boys as young as 6 or 7 to men in just as many decades.

They, in this male dominated world would remind each other to step out of the way so I could film and photograph. They, the same men would never stare at two black abaya clad arab women in a car watching their rituals, not here at the celebration nor anywhere did we feel uncomfortable due to overt staring or ogling as it did not happen.

Their quiet, dignified respect for us commanded the same be reciprocated.

Our stomachs served as a reminder of their emptiness and craving of the yet again delicious Yemeni fares, we dove into samak mekhbaza (fish in a clay oven - tannour) the unbelievable fa7ssa, oh and we had the most delicious clear vegetable soup in lamb broth from their sister Lebanese restaurant al waleema. Madame muna, talal and all the gr8 boys were delighted with us! Yesterday Radhwan spoilt us, this evening murshed amd bassam pampered us and murshed told us the name of the singer of "golli ya gazallee" as being hussein mo7eb.

Satiated stuffed and smiling we carried the 7aneed and the other fish for abdulaziz to share with us. He couldn't eat b4 as he was 'keeping' Qat. Boy does Qat rule most of their daily lives if not all! I mean it tastes like grass, u gotta chew and store in your cheeks, do not swallow, you need to keep drinking water as it may affect your kidneys, and must only have it after a meal. Abdulaziz had his in his mouth for at least 4 hours! The few leaves that I had barely made any impression on me whether by taste, feel or the non-existent pimple-like portrusion in my cheek. It's overrated I think but perhaps I didn't do it the right way, I mean the stuff rules a nation! As a citizen of yemen, in most countries outside of yemen u go to your embassy or consulate and they wiil give you your ration. It must do something!

We chatted till late at the reception with khaled who has taken care of us like sisters as have all the others from abdulwahed to ahmed. We spoke of life God, agathe, spirituality, God and our next trip in the morning to dar al 7ajar.

It was a chilly night especially as our room is qiblee and so we wore socks, doubled the blankets and put on our cardigans to bed.

Sana'a Day 3 (Friday 13 Feb 2009)

Today we saw Sharayar of 1001 nights, of fairy tales and legends, today we saw the prince carrying his sword in all its glory sheathed in Gold. The groom was in celebration in dar al hajjar at wadi al thahr. His handsome face would have done many a tale proud, again that finely sculpted nose of nobility, hazel eyes, adorned with a skull cap embroidened with gold, dressed in a beautifully brilliant white thob, I wonder, if his Sheherazade new of his beauty, or was she far and beyond expectations that we can only read about them and imagine them?

We also me harry potter of yemen, a cute 15 year old with round glasses named sattaam. He cares for a silver shop at wadi al thahr.

As we drove I saw a slogan that truly touched me. It was romantic... Reminding me of wilfred owens poem 'dulce et decorum est pro patria mori' a poem describing the uglyness of war and how we feed our sons the noble saying that 'it's sweet & fitting to die for one's country.'

We drove along a dusty red road down towards the palace of "the prince of faithfuls, al mutawakul 3ala Allah" imam Yahya Hamiduddin. It was a dusty sandy day unlike any other days witnessed in sana'a. The road was red as the eart changed, it was a glorious terracotta of colour, the kind u can rarely copy or emulate, a brick colour of an eart rich in minerals painting the landscape.

As we arrived at the popular tourist spot w saw people of all walks and races, yemenis, arabs, westerners, black, white, yellow, brown and all shades of the almighty's creation in between.

The building was, in all truth, a glorious architectural creation of natural stone, its erection commenced, so they say, before islam. The tree at its entrance was more than 800 years old! The multi-leveled, multi-tiered structure is a wonder in itself as it stands atop the hillside over looking the rest of wadi al thahr.

At the 'lobby' level mafrajah where we sat and had juice to cool our sandy parched throats, whilst abdulaziz went for Friday prayers, is where we encountered the handsome groom and his friend and brother.

Kuwait City- It was the first time I realised that the very bright, young and privileged can also be very foolish. In the summer of 1989, a couple of my American friends, dressed in Arab garb borrowed from me and toting water rifles, "terrorised" the campus of Brown University.

A day after my friends staged their "attack", an Arab American student called a public meeting to protest the racism of the stunt. Why was he so upset?

I didn't get it then. Now I do.

During a recent lecture on the biological bases of behaviour, I passed out two articles to my medical students at Kuwait University, one from the New York Times and the other from New York Magazine. I had deleted all clues as to the identity of the subjects and the locations in the stories. I asked the students to read the articles and guess where the stories had taken place.

The first article concerned a group of clerics, known as the "Party of [God]", who advocated serious consequences for those caught romancing on Valentine's Day. They warned that St. Valentine was a Christian saint and that celebrating this day was therefore strictly against their religion. And they threatened to immediately marry off any couples caught flirting. Opponents described the clerics' behaviour as "Talibanisation."

My students imagined these hardliners harassing the poor romantics, and they were unanimous: this fiasco could only have taken place in Saudi Arabia.

But my students were wrong. In fact, the incident took place in India and the deity in question was a Hindu god. Allah caught a break on that one.

In the second article I gave the students, a woman complained that "stupid Talibans" had assailed her immediately after a gentleman stranger stopped her on the street to comment on how cute her baby was. When the man left, three minivans immediately surrounded the woman. Half a dozen bearded men jumped out and began interrogating her on the street: "Who was he? What did he want?"

This time, the students were deadlocked on the location - evenly split between Afghanistan and Saudi Arabia. Fixed in their minds were images of stick-wielding morality police on the streets of Kabul or Riyadh.

It shattered the students' mental images to find out that this "Committee for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice" was roaming the streets of New York, and that the religion in question was Judaism. Once again, Allah was not implicated.

It has been shown that chimpanzees will go to war to protect their territory. I argued to my students that aggression toward others who don't share one's beliefs is nothing more than war over intellectual territory; religious faith is an intellectual line in the air. I concluded by saying that the religious extremists must be right about Darwin: clearly, there are no signs of evolution here.

My intent was to advance the notion that extremism is nothing more than a bunch of neurotransmitters working overtime - or perhaps under time. It is not Islam or Judaism or Hinduism that creates extremism; rather, some people are predisposed to extremism and will pursue it in any faith.

Yet it was fascinating to see that my students in Kuwait, by opting for Saudi Arabia as a likely location of both stories, seemed to associate their own faith, Islam, with extremism.

The fact is that, in today's world, anyone would have reached a similar conclusion. In the age of the internet and satellite television, my students are not shielded from the misconceptions and misrepresentations of their faith any more than the Arab American student at Brown had been.

But if Muslims grow up to identify extremism with Islam, and to believe that to be an accurate reflection of their religion, then we will have a far bigger problem than we ever could have imagined. Passing off aberration as the norm is a danger to all of us. And constantly setting the record right on what is and isn't Islam is the duty of every able communicator in today's multimedia world.

أخطأ «طوال الشوارب» وأصابت.. امرأة
تحت عنوان »هدف سني بتمريرة شيعية« كتبت الزميلة العزيزة »إقبال الأحمد« مقالاً في »القبس« يوم أمس الأول نقلت كلماته من سيدة كويتية حضرت في ندوة انتخابية للمرشح طلال الغانم، و..نستأذن الزميلة »إقبال« في إعادة نشر مقالها في هذا العمود تعميماً.. للفائدة والذي تقول فيه

قبل أن يختتم المرشح طلال الغانم كلمته في افتتاح مقره... أصر على أن يستمع الحضور من الرجال والنساء إلى بضع كلمات طلبت منه إحدى السيدات أن يقرأها أمام الملأ، وكأنها تجيب عن كل التساؤلات التي طرحها ويطرحها كل المرشحين وان اختلفت شعاراتهم ومحاور برامجهم الانتخابية.
لماذا كانت الكويت جوهرة الخليج في الماضي؟ تقول
الشعر كان يعيش أفضل عصوره لما رثى الشاعر ملا عابدين الشيعي الشاعر عبدالله الفرج السني.
الموسيقى كانت تعيش أزهى عصورها لما كان التنافس بين ألحان سعود الراشد السني
وألحان محمود الكويتي الشيعي.
تسيدنا التجارة في الماضي لما كان نوخذة سني يبحر في بوم صنعه قلاف شيعي.
الأغاني كانت أحلى على عود حمد خليفة السني ومرواس فاضل مقامس الشيعي.
المسرح كان في قمته لأن الذي أسسه حمد الرجيب السني وأكمل مسيرته عبد الحسين عبد الرضا الشيعي.
ما كان عندنا طائفية كريهة لأن صوت الأذان المرتفع يختلط بين مئذنتي مسجد المزيدي
ومسجد بن رومي في شرق.
ما كان عندنا طائفية كريهة لما كان الناس يحضرون مجلس السيد الحنيان السني
عن مقتل الحسين في الحسينية الخزعلية.
كنا نعيش أزهى عصور الأدب عندما قام خالد سعود الزيد السني
بتوثيق حياة الأديب عبد الرزاق البصير الشيعي.
كنا نعيش الوحدة الوطنية لما يوسف البدر ويوسف الصبيح السنيان
وزعا الأكل على الفقراء من السنة والشيعة في سنة الهيلق،
ولما فتح عبد الوهاب الوزان الشيعي مخازنه لمحتاجي الكويت
من السنة والشيعة خلال الغزو العراقي.
وكنا أسياد الرياضة لما سجل فيصل الدخيل السني
هدفا في كأس العالم من خلال تمريرة من عبدالله البلوشي الشيعي
وسجل هذا الهدف باسم الكويت. .. .
لم أسمع تصفيقا في حرارة ذلك التصفيق الذي دوى في خيمة المرشح طلال الغانم...
وكأن الكل يقول نعم نحن كنا كذلك... ونريد كلنا أن نبقى كذلك.

الغريب أن نغمة جديدة دخلت علينا الآن.. أنا حضري وأنت بدوي.. أنا ابن العوايل و انت ابن المناطق الخارجية. أعيد كتابة ما سبق، وأضيف: نعم كنا نعيش أفضل عصورنا في الشعر والموسيقى والتجارة والمسرح والأدب، كنا نعيش الوحدة الوطنية بجلال قدرها وقمة معانيها عندما كنا نتحدث وننادي بعضنا بأسمائنا وأسماء عوائلنا دون أن يعني لنا الاسم أي طائفة أو قبيلة أو مذهب، لم نكن نعرف هذا السؤال.. هو سني أم شيعي.. مطيري ولاّ عنزي.. حضري ولاّ بدوي؟؟ لم تكن هذه الأسئلة في قاموس تعامل أهل الكويت في يوم من الأيام إلا عندما فجرها جهلة الكويت والحاقدون عليها.. والأميون فيها وان كانوا يحملون شهادات الدكتوراه. *** .. لوكنت موجوداً في تلك الندوة وعقب سماعي لكلماتها الرائعة هذه ... لقمت من مكاني واتجهت إليها و..»حبيت خشمها« لأن عقلها وإحساسها وضميرها تجاوز ـ بملايين الفراسخـ عقل وإحساس وضمير.. »طوال الشوارب«! شكراً للسيدة»الرائعة« وشكراً للزميلة إقبال!

لا أعتقد أن أحد من العراقيين لا يعرف فخر العرب والعراق الشاعر الكبير محمــد مهدي الجواهري ، هذا الشاعر الكبير الذي أغنى التراث الأدبي بشعره الرائق ..
في أحد المناسبات الأدبية في السعودية حضر فيها كل من الشاعر محمد مهــــــدي الجواهري و الشاعر عبد الوهابي البياتي وذلك في زمن حصار العراق وعلى غرار حضورهم قرر الرئيس صدام حسين سحب الجنسية العراقية منهم كعقوبة لهم فوجه الشاعر الجواهري قصيدته هذه في حق صدام حسين ردا على هذا الأجــــراء فقال :

يا غادرا إن رمت تسألنـــي أجيبك من أنــــــــــــــــــــا
فأنا العربي سيف عزمــــه لا ما أنثنــــــــــــــــــــــــى

Of Tomorrow and Yesterday

To know the meaning, the feeling of having my hands held… what a novelty! Yet will I ever? No, never! To dare even to think of love, of any emotion, of passion and joy, of light feet and a lighter heart, I can only remember.

I remember when, I didn't have a heavy heart, with dead senses, barely lifting their head to acknowledge a predator, ready to embrace that final gesture of love, of being enveloped by the mighty end.

When a voice, a call, a whisper, a dark promise late at night, a bright lie early in the morning; disappearing faster than a magic spell, as the mist in a scorching desert sun. No trace, not even of the salt from the sea.

As now the soul lingers, wondering what will it be? This life, that has left me. Time has been neither a friend nor foe. Time has just simply passed, at its pace, surely, constantly, lifting his hand as he waves by.

أنا من الصغر و في سن الشقاوة و اللعب 'أتكعبل' بالعباءة السوداء التي تجذب أشعة الشمس،

و التي في أحيان كثيرة تجعلني أصل لدرجة الغليان ...

أنت الحلم الأول لكل أب حتى يتباهى بك بين أسرته و أصدقائه و أنا الحلم الثاني ..

أنت حب الأم الأول، لأن تشريفك قد يلغي زواج والدك الثاني بحثاً عنك،

و أنت سبب التباهي 'بأم الذكور' و أنا سبب نكد الأم،

لأن تشريفي قد يؤدي إلى زواج الأب بحثاً عنك، و أنا سبب معايرة أمي 'بأم البنات'

.. أنت تسمع اسمك كل يوم في زهو حين يكنون والديك 'أبو فلان' و 'أم فلان'

و أنا محرومة من سماع اسمي و كأنني غير موجودة أصلاً،

و إذا تساهل الأب و سم للجميع بتسميته بأبي فلانة

أنت تتزوج ممن ترغب، و في أي وقت تعدد، و أبناؤك يحصلون 'اوتوماتيكياً'

على الجنسية التي تخصك، و حتى زوجتك إذا كانت غير سعودية,

و أنا لا أتزوج في أي وقت أرغب فيه بالزواج، فأمري كله بيد وليي '

أب – أخ – عم – جد'.

أما عن الاختيار فلا مجال 'نوع من الكماليات لا أحلم به حالياً

أنا إذا ما سمح لي لكبر سني مثلا بالزواج من غير سعودي

فلا يحصل زوجي و لا أبنائي على جنسيتي إلا بعد مرمطة،

و إذا قدر الحصول عليها فابني الذكر يحصل عليها عند سن الـ 18،

أما ابنتي الأنثى فتحصل عليها عند بلوغ الـ35 سنة و بشروط مغلظة !

و كأنه عقاب مجتمعي و جماعي ضد إبنائي أيضا على زواجي من غير سعودي!

أنت لك الحق في التطليق متى شئت من دون محاسبة و أحياناً تختفي من دون تطليق

و من دون احترام لحياة إنسانة مصيرها متعلق بيدك بعد الله،

بينما لا يحق لي طلب الطلاق،

و إذا ما تجرأت لسبب أو لآخر فأعرف مسبقاً أ سنوات عمري ستنقضي دون الحصول عليه،

لأنك لا تحضر الجلسة!و لأنني مطالبة بإثبات الضرر

Negresco - Childhood recipe revisited!

· Pack of Pasta (my childhood memory recalls spaghetti)

o Boil until al dente (4 liters of water with a pinch of salt and a hint of olive oil)

· 1 Chicken (usually people prefer breast, but it's my childhood memory)

o Boil the chicken until tender

§ Add salt & pinch of black pepper

§ a stick of cinnamon

§ 1 whole onion

§ 1 carrot

§ 1 stalk celery

o Save the chicken stock aside

o Remove all the bones from the chicken leaving only meat

o Shred the chicken

· Vegetable mix (frozen mini mix or canned mix) (childhoods mix was peas and carrots)

o Mix the veggies with the chicken

· Béchamel sauce (recipe follows)

o Mix 2/3 of sauce with the chicken mix

Assembly

· Pre heat oven to 300 degrees

· Butter a baking dish and coat the bottom layer with breadcrumbs

· Place a layer of pasta on the bottom

· Top with a generous layer of the chicken/veggie béchamel mix

· Place another layer of pasta

· Top with the 1/3 sauce (mixed with egg & cheese) that was kept aside

· As preferred top with some more grated cheese

· Place in pre-heated 350 degrees oven for around 45 minutes or until the top layer is a crunchy crispy golden brown of spaghetti strips

Béchamel Sauce

· 4 Tablespoons Butter

· 4 Tablespoons Flour

· 4 Cups of Milk (or 3 milk ½ cream) – OR – 2 Cups Milk, 2 Cups Chicken Broth, ½ cream

· A pinch of Nutmeg

· 2 tsp of salt

· In a saucepan, warm the butter and gradually add the flour

· Sauté till golden smooth around 5 minutes

· In a separate pan, heat the milk to near boiling temperature

· Remove from fire

· Add the mix to the mixture, slowly & gradually, to avoid clumping

· Bring to a boil whisking and stirring constantly for around 10 minutes

· Remove from heat adding salt and nutmeg

· (save a third and whisk with an egg and a grated Kraft cheese)

I don't know how many (girl)friends I'll make or lose on this column. I definitely view it as a piece that is more on the experimental side of writing. Perhaps it is just me right now… or just me and a few others. Perhaps it is you after reading it. Perhaps it is the zeitgeist of our times.

Religion tells us that Eve was born of Adam, a derivative of his rib. And henceforth, Eve always looked to Adam for shelter and food, and Adam expected Eve to require such shelter and food for ever and ever.

And so the most symbiotic of all symbiotic relationships began, and the first social contract was notarised. The dynamic of the relationship was similar to how a child looks at a guardian nowadays – there were social expectations on both ends. And those expectations went on to shape the way men and women today not only interact but also approach relationships. Socialising between men and women has become a kind of bazaar where men are looking for females who charmingly acquiesce, and women are looking for breadwinners.

This is the extent to which I will assume an understanding of the female psyche. It's not what this column is about; the purpose of this week's piece is to present an alternative curiosity from a man's perspective. My curiosity revolves around what I'm going to call "the reformed tomboy".

According to the dictionary on my computer, tomboy (pronounced like this: |'täm,boi|) is a noun that refers to "a girl who enjoys rough, noisy activities traditionally associated with boys".

I have noticed a softening, even a level of warmth, in the way society in general – and the media specifically – have come to view tomboys over the past decade, and even celebrate the reformed ones.

I believe this is due in part to the understanding of what makes a girl subscribe to what ever actions (no make up, playing video games, becoming involved in sports etc) that would categorise her as a tomboy; the understanding that, with such a range of interests, those girls also develop more spontaneity and an unconventional and contagious sense of sincerity.

The reason for that is their rejection – at a relatively early age – of their role as a woman in need of shelter and food. This over the years develops into a strong sense of independence and the ability to be truly a friend of members of the opposite sex.

What I'm trying to say is that such a woman, if she then gives her hair a blow-dry and puts on some heels, becomes a very interesting person. In fact, a woman so interesting, she'd probably scare a good percentage of the males "in the market". And rightly so, especially since these men have been told – by fathers, elder brothers and cousins, and most other men with more facial hair than them at the bar or the majlis – that women expect to be taken care of and that their raison d'être is to perform that role.

But back to our "reformed tomboy": as far as some men are concerned, she's a dream girl. Someone who has managed to remain feminine but still knows the difference between penalties and corner kicks, PlayStation 2 and PlayStation 3, and Star Wars and Star Trek.

In the same way that wise old men advise younger males, elder sisters and cousins – and, indeed, any other woman with more mani-padi time under her belt – are likely to suggest that a girl's best course is to position herself as a wonderful prospective housewife. The classic female-to-female advice sums up their attitude entirely: "Men are like children, always treat them that way and you'll get what you want."

The old social contract between man and woman doesn't work as it stands any more. It is not sustainable because the premise itself is not sustainable. When a man and woman marry, it should be for more than just shelter and food – and it is sometimes more than that. But when it is not, then it is likely to end either in divorce or in a very disconnected household kept together by the guilt of not mentally scarring the children.

The qualities of the reformed tomboy may not always be apparent at first, but like most things of value will get better with time. Which is not necessarily the case when women marry men for their wealth and position and an implied sense of security (that may not always be there), and men marry women for their beauty and their ability to run a household, which might also be lost over time.

It is important to understand what a person needs, not just now but tomorrow. In the end we want our life partners to understand us and be our friends. I know I don't want my girl to be scared of my Nintendo.

فاجأني زملاء المهنة بكعك كثير ووقطعة كيك كتب عليها بالإنكيزية عيد ميلاد سعيد!!!وقفت بينهم وشكرت الخالق عز وجل(اللهم الحمد لك والشكر لك ياإلهي لأنك منحتني عمرا أكثر مما منحت نبيك محمد صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم.)تساقطت دمعتان من عيني وكدت أبكي لأول مرة أمام الموظفين وعالجت دموعي بدعاء كنت اعتقد بأنه سيخفف من التشنج وإيقاف الدموع ولكنه زاد من شحنة العواطف, خاصة وأنا أتذكر إن الباقي قليل ويجب علي الإسراع في العمل لأكمل رسالتي في الحياة وأخدم أمتي واعطي مما قد اقدر عليه من عمل فيما تبقى لي من العيش.

نظرت في عيون الشباب من عيون إغرورقت بالدموع, وقلت لهم بعد أن شكرتهم على لفتتهم الكريمة, وبدأت اذكرهذا الدعاء.اللهم إرحمني واغفر لي وإعفو عني ووالدي وعافني وارزقني واسترني وأهلي وأحبائي وأصدقائي وزملائي وإغفر لكافة المؤمنين ولكل من عمل معي وعملت معهم.اللهم الحمد لك لما أعطيتني من نعمة وأهل واصدقاء وزملاء والشكر لك لما وهبتني من نعمة ورزقتني بأهل وأصدقاء وزملاء محبين.

مرت كل هذه الأعوام الأربعة والستون, وأنا لم أفعل فيها شيئا يستحق الإطراء والحمد فكيف بالقليل المتبقي؟؟لست نادما على شئ ولكني كان بإمكاني أن اعطي اكثر مما أعطيت, وأخذ أكثر مما أخذت, ولكني لم أفعل بل رضيت بالقليل وأعطيت بكل قوة.ما العمل وما سأفعل ليغفر لي ربي ويعفوا عني ويرحمني وأهلي وأحبائي ويرضى عني الناس والأهل وشعبي في العراق خاصة وأنا لم أعمل ولا يوم في العراق؟؟

رأيناكَ في الحلمِ في لُجَّةٍ من غبارْ
خطاً مثقلاتٍ،

من يملك ذرة من الحس الإنساني أو قطرة من الإنتماء الوطني للعراق لابد أن يسكب أدمعا مازجة بالدم وهو يقرأ المقابلة التي أجرتها ( إيلاف ) مع الفنانة العراقية المبدعة هناء عبدالله التي طالما أتحفتنا خلال مسيرتها الفنية بأعلى درجات الإبداع الفني وهي تستعيد التراث العراقي برقصاتها الجميلة التي كانت تؤديها بمرافقة أجمل الإغاني العراقية الشعبية والفولكلورية في ذلك الزمن الجميل من تاريخ العراق الثقافي والفني،وكانت هناء تلامس برقصاتها على المسرح شغاف قلوبنا وهي تتمايل على أنغام ( الهجع ) أو ( خدري الجاي ) أو ( يم العباية ) وغيرها من غرر الأغاني التراثية العراقية.

وما عبرت عنه هذه الفنانة المبدعة أثناء ذلك اللقاء ، يفطر القلب ويهز ضمير أي إنسان عراقي سواء شرب من مياه دجلة ،أو تنسم هواء كردستان، أو من لفحته حرارة الرياح داخل خيمته في صحارى العراق القاحلة في الجنوب.

فقد مثلت هذه الإنسانة وفرقتها القومية العراق في المحافل الدولية، ورفعت إسمه عاليا من خلال حصد عشرات الجوائز التقديرية لفرقتها التي كانت في زمن الدكتاتورية والشعب يقبع داخل السجن الكبير ،هي المتنفس الوحيد لإطلالة العراق على العالم، وكانت الأعمال التي تقدمها الفرقة هي الفرحة الوحيدة الباعثة للنفس من على شاشة التلفزيون العراقي اليتيم التي كانت مزدحمة بصور ولقاءات الدكتاتور الأوحد.

محنة هناء عبدالله هي جزء من محنة جميع المبدعين العراقيين الذين هاجروا مثل الحمامات البيضاء أعشاشهم، تشردوا في أنحاء العالم ، فأغنوا ثقافات الشعوب بعد أن حرمتهم الدكتاتورية من خدمة شعبهم وبلدهم، توزعوا على منافي الأرض ومهاجرها يخدمون غيرهم، ولم تسنح لهم فرصة العودة الى البلد بعد سقوط صنم الدكتاتور، لأن من جاؤا بعده كأنت أيامهم أكثر قتامة، وفرص المبدعين أقل من ذرة غبار تثيره أقدام الميليشات المتناحرة في العراق.

في ظل ( الديمقراطية؟؟!!!!) الجديدة الموثقة في دستور العراق، تعاني مبدعة عراقية التي حرمت نفسها من كل متع الحياة الإنسانية لكي تخدم بلدها بفنها الراقي من مأساة حقيقية يندى لها جبين كل من سجل في هويته أنه عراقي..

إسمعوها وهي تسكب كلماتها الحزينة على الورق في دولة ميزانيتها لعام واحد 48 مليار دولار أمريكي " تصور أن راتبي بعد كل هذا العمر والعمل (200) ألف دينار وذلك بسبب التمويل الذاتي، أنا وزميلي فؤاد ذنون راتبنا هذا وطبعا أضيف اليه مكافأة السيد المدير العام لدائرة السينما والمسرح الذي انتبه الى ذلك، وأدفع منه (150) الف للايجار" ؟؟؟؟!!!!..

وإسمعوها ثانية وهي تكمل " مع ذلك أقول الحمد لله والشكر هذا الذي حصلنا عليه ومع ذلك نشتغل ونقدم" ؟؟؟؟!!!!!!.

وإعلم أيها القاريء ،أن مخصصات ملا معمم معين في إحدى الحسينيات أو قائدا للميليشيات تزيد مليون مرة عن راتب هذه الفنانة المبدعة ؟!.فيا لها من قسمة ضيزى ..

ولكن ماذا نقول لمن يعين معمما وزيرا للثقافة، أو يعين قصابا أو نجارا أو صبي مقاهي وزراء ومدراء عامين وضباطا تتلألأ النجوم على أكتافهم في زمن أردأ من زمن الدكتاتورية ؟!.

ماذا نقول لمن يعتبر الهوية الطائفية وثيقة للإقامة وتملك الأرض والهواء والسماء؟!.

ماذا نقول لمن يصرف مئات الملايين من الدولارات على الميليشيات المسلحة السائبة ليكرسها في خدمة أهدافه الطائفية البغيضة، ويعين قادتها وزراء أو مسؤولين في الدولة؟!.

لم أسال أحدا إن كانت هناء عبدالله شيعية أم سنية أو صابئية أو يزيدية، ولكني كنت أتمايل طربا بتمايلها مع أنغام الموسيقى العراقية الإصيلة، كما كنت أتسلطن مع صوت ناظم الغزالي أو حضيري أبو عزيز أو وحيدة خليل أو زهور حسين أو عبدالصاحب شراد أو حسين نعمة أو رضا الخياط أو رياض أحمد وهم يصدحون بأجمل الأغاني العراقية .

لم أسأل أحدا ما إذا كان يوسف العاني أو خليل شوقي أو محمد القيسي أو وجيه عبدالغني أو قاسم الملاك أو ناهدة الرماح أو سناء عبدالرحمن كانوا من الشيعة أو السنة، ولكني كنت مأخوذا بأدائهم على المسرح من دون أن يخطر ببالي هويتهم الطائفية.

لم أسأل يوما إن كان الجواهري أو الزهاوي أو الرصافي أو عزيز السيد جاسم كانوا من الشيعة أو السنة، ولكني كنت أتمتع بقراءة كتبهم وأشعارهم التي كونت جزءا من ثقافتي العربية.

لم أكن لأهتم بطائفة حسن العلوي وأنا أقرأ له كتبا يوثق لتاريخ العراق المعاصر لا تختلف في قيمتها مما كتبه عمالقة الأدب والثفافة العربية، حتى وصل به الأمر أن يؤلف كتابا عن عمر يتحدى به طائفية بعض سلاطين بغداد الحاليين.

هؤلاء كانوا ومازالوا رموز العراق، شامخين أبد الدهر، هزم معاصروهم الدكتاتورية بنتاجاتهم الإبداعية وعطاءاتهم الفكرية والفنية والثقافية..

فكم وزيرا ورئيسا للوزراء جاء وولى، ولكن هذه الأسماء اللامعة كانت وستبقى تتلألأ فوق سماء العراق ، وبينها النجمة اللامعة هناء عبدالله التي تسمو رقصة منها فوق رؤوس المئات من قادة الميليشيات المسلحة في العراق.

كم كان صادقا عبدالرحمن الماجدي في قصيدته المعنونة بـ ( خدمة العلم ) وهو يعبر عن خوالج المئات من الملهوفين على مصير العراق مخاطبا تلك الخرقة البالية التي تثير نزاعات العمائم البيض والسود :

لستَ سوى خرقةٍ،

سراويلُ حبيباتنا أزهى من ألوانها.

حمالاتُ صدورهن أحقُ بالنشيد ِ.

فَرفرفْ بعيدا ً عن هوائنا.

نعم هو كذلك، فرقصة تؤديها هناء عبدالله على المسرح الوطني تسوى عندي عشرة إتفاقات معقودة بين الكتل السياسية والطائفية في العراق.

Depression

Apparently, I'm depressed. Clinically. Well, I've yet to have a professional diagnosis, but it all seems to lead to this.

I was thinking the other day, that at this moment, if it did not anger God, nor hurt my parents, well... I'm fed-up! (this is another symptom)

I cried talking about ice-cream and when a doctor was taking my pulse because I had chest pains (more symptoms, I found)

I don't feel like doing anything...

And all this because of what? Work. I love to work, I enjoy being busy, but I'm not right now and I'm struggling. I keep inventing ways to keep busy but it is difficult. It's a management thing. My boss is not a Manager, nor is he a CEO, not even a leader. He is simply a 'project manager' - differs drastically!

I am tired, I even thought that had I lived elsewhere I might've resorted to other solutions, but, again, I wouldn't want to anger the Almighty.

I'm tired, I have a strenuous headache, which is more muscular than your reuglar headache, pain killers don't work, muscle relaxants and sleeping pills gave me a night mare the first night and now I'm terrified of trying it again even though it may have been coincidence! (Norgesic)

I'm tired, I'm also looking for work. BUT, I, unfortunately, don't even feel like tweeking my CV...

I don't feel like going to any funky resto's nor cooking something delicious, I don't feel anything I think.

I guess I need to seek professional help for some medication like Cymbalta - so I read.

I don't know me anymore and that saddens me.

Dubai construction workers strike

Thousands of foreign construction workers in the Gulf state of Dubai have gone on strike over pay and conditions.
Workers blocked roads and threw stones at police on Saturday, prompting a government threat to deport rioters.
A fall in value of the UAE dirham means workers are unable to send as much money home as they previously could.
Dubai's economy has boomed in recent years, fuelled largely by a construction industry reliant on low-paid workers, many from South Asia.
But the emirate has been hit by a labour shortage recently as India's own economic boom has offered an alternative source of jobs.
Dubai's foreign workers are demanding higher pay and improved housing as they work on prestige projects such as the Burj Dubai - set to be the world's tallest building.
Analysts say it is time for the authorities to consider a minimum wage.

Dubai construction workers strike

Thousands of South Asian construction workers have gone on strike in Dubai over bad working conditions and low pay, threatening the emirate's already struggling building boom.
Labourers have long complained about working conditions in the Gulf and Sunday's strike comes as contractors struggle to find workers to complete their projects.
"The cost of living here has increased so much in the past two years that I cannot survive with my salary," said Rajesh Kumar, a 24-year-old worker from the south Indian state of Andhra Pradesh who earns $149 a month.
He said employers consistently ignored workers' requests for pay increases.
Dubai, home to the Burj Dubai, the world's tallest building expected to be completed in 2008, and the first Armani luxury hotel, is seeing an annual average growth rate of 12 per cent, according to the authorities.
The boom is largely driven by construction, fuelled by investment from oil-rich neighbours and made possible by armies of non-unionised south Asian workers.
Stirkes are illegal in the Emirates.

But on Sunday, labourers ignored threats of deportation and refused to go to work, demanding pay increases, improved housing and better transportation services to construction sites.
They staged protests at a labour camp in Dubai's Jebel Ali industrial zone and on a construction site in the al-Qusais residential neighbourhood.
Protesting workers threw stones at the police on Saturday, damaging some police cars. Ali bin Abdullah al-Kaabi, Dubai's minister of labour, described workers' behaviour as "uncivilised", saying they were tampering with national security and endangering residents' safety. He told state news agency WAM they had "turned themselves into rioters", rather than registering their complaints peacefully. He said those who damaged public property would be deported.

But construction companies do not want more workers to leave as they struggle to find enough to complete existing projects following a government amnesty that gave free tickets home to illegal labourers. In June, the government offered an amnesty to illegal workers and were promptly swamped by 280,000 applications for exit papers. A booming economy in India means that many Indian labourers no longer see the need to travel to Dubai and the Gulf, said Bernard Raj, managing director of the Dubai-based Keith International, which supplies Indian workers. "In the past, when we go for recruitment of workers we were able to choose whomever we wanted. Now the turnout of candidates is very low," he said. Raj estimated that at least 40 per cent more workers were needed for the city's projects. The workers have also suffered from the decline of the Emirati Dihram which, pegged to the US dollar, has plummeted in value, further decreasing labourers' already low salaries.

For finger food with a difference…

Karachi Darbar Dodge in between the melee of uniformed waiters that are dashing among the crowded tables carrying platters piled with extremely cheap and exquisitely tasty Pakistani food, and grab yourself a seat. Flag down a fleet-footed waiter and ask for a chicken or mutton biryani. No sooner does the last syllable leave your lips than fresh naan breads, salad, mint yoghurt with chilli and a dish of curry sauce arrive with a flourish. Then brace yourself for a gigantic portion of subtly flavoured basmati rice strewn with soft nuggets of juicy meat. Feel free to scoop it up with your bread and your hands, especially if you need to toss away any bones – this place is all about keeping it real.

Samad Serving the Iraqi diaspora in Dubai is Samad, the local branch of a Baghdad chain. Casting a warm glow upon the street through its yawning windows, it’s an inviting prospect for non-Iraqis too. From an open kitchen of revolving kebabs, glinting blades and licking flames comes a small bowl of potato and vegetable soup next to a basket of flat breads. Then there’s the Iraqi shammi (pictured) – an inflated pillowcase of crisp batter on a base of bread with a scattered salad. It’s an Aladdin’s cave of tender lamb and chicken pieces tumbling over fragrant wild rice, noodles, sultanas and pine nuts beneath a seductive plume of steam. Like your hosts, you’ll be glad you found this Iraqi haven here in Dubai.

Ravi Restaurant The swanky restaurants of Jumeirah might pull out all the stops to keep you entertained, but they’ll put a dent in your wallet the size of the Burj. The simple Pakistani food and unintentional street drama at Ravi’s can be just as compelling – at a fraction of the price. Sit outside, watch the tireless tide of humanity sweep along the Satwa Road, and enjoy a tender bihiri kebab alongside a feisty mutton palak in a rich curry swamp spiked with chilli, or an aggressive chicken sukha in a rich quicksand of spice. You’ll struggle to spend more than Dhs50 for two people and the food is excellent, which might explain Ravi’s near legendary status.

For a culinary adventure…

Pinoy Grill Here, those inexperienced in the joys of Filipino food can sample a veritable madhouse of unusual delicacies without driving their bank managers bonkers in the process. With its shaved ice, jackfruit, jelly cubes, sweetcorn (yes, sweetcorn), mung beans and mashed purple yam soaked in evaporated milk, the halo halo is simply insane. Slightly less wacky is the lumpiang sariwa, or sweetly wrapped rolls of fresh carrot, mangetout, spring onion, prawns and lettuce with crushed garlic and peanut sauce; or the house speciality bulalo, which offers a huge hacking of fatty beef that spills squishy marrow from the bone into a watery, cabbage-strewn stock. Throw caution to the wind and discover that Filipino food is every bit as adventurous as the non-Filipinos who choose to explore it.

Afghan Kebab House Banish all preconceptions of sizzling elephant’s feet revolving in tawdry kebab house windows because this place is the real deal. Once you’ve found the Afghan Kebab House among the labyrinthine alleys of deepest Deira, grab a naan bread the size of a continental quilt and fill it with chicken, lamb and beef licked into juicy tenderness by lashing flames on the skewer. It’s a unique experience – all around you, groups of weary men huddle over crouching tables deluged with food, discussing the trials and tribulations of the working day. Kick back with a full belly and smile to yourself about the job you’ve had just to find the place.

For a no-frills Indian…

Hyderabad House Perched on a terrace overlooking the manic asphalt below, this unassuming restaurant is little more than a cheap and cheerful chow down where people can find a hearty meal. Which is exactly what you’ll discover as you sit among flickering fluorescent lights and peeling poster art, at tables stocked with jugs of tap water and boxes of flimsy tissues. Thankfully, the traditional Hyderabadi food on offer here is very good indeed. The chicken curry offers monolithic hunks of tender meat, which fall effortlessly from the bone into a rich, oily and spicy sauce. The talawa gosht – a dry dish of red, chilli-infused lamb nuggets in coriander and tandoori spices – is perfect for sharing, and the steaming parathas should be used to scoop everything up.

For bonkers Bangkok bites…

Smiling BKK The eccentric dish titles at Smiling BKK (‘fook mi’, ‘experience of crack’, ‘like a virgin’) are a perfectly innocent (if a little cheeky) facet of this quirky Thai restaurant’s immense appeal. The ‘shiny happy people’ offers sumptuously deep-fried prawns with garlic, while the ‘balls of delight’ are nice and spongy orbs of fish. And the aforementioned ‘fook mi’ is a jumbled mass of flat noodles, chicken and cabbage in soy sauce. With its café-style food, friendly service, daft interior, bonkers menu and shameless amateurishness, this tiny place has something that all the five-star restaurants in the world can’t buy – charm. And if you tell some funny jokes on comedy night every Monday, you could get to eat for free. We defy you to find cheaper grub than that.

For edible tableware…

Pillars It might look like a perished grey disc of old deckchair foam, but injera – a traditional Ethiopian flatbread made with a tiny grain called teff – is the most versatile foodstuff known to man. Not only can you use it as a tablecloth, a plate, a napkin and a utensil, but you can eat it too. At this nondescript Ethiopian coffee shop, the yefisig beyanetu is a combination of spicy meat stews and salad served on a giant injera you could hold a circus under. But that doesn’t stop most of the Ethiopian diners here from unloading lots of their food onto the table. Maybe they want to see injera in all its naked glory?

For quintessential Britishness…

The Fish Supper Unlike other purveyors of Britain’s illustrious national dish in Dubai, The Fish Supper is not faking it. The owners, the Kennedy family, are genuine fish and chip enthusiasts. One trip to their restaurant will convince the most discerning of chipophiles that these chaps certainly know their (pickled) onions. They understand fully the art of creating perfect batter. They pickle a mean egg and their fish is chosen with skill and precision. Their discriminatory attitude towards selecting potatoes ensures premier league chips. Tucked away in the food court of an obscure Rashidiya shopping mall, these might just be the best fish and chips in the entire emirate.

For Palestinian home cooking…

Habiba Al Nabulsi Huge trays of piping-hot kanafa, that devastatingly calorific combo of gooey cheese, honey and pistachio nuts, are bright red beacons that light up the main room of Habiba Al Nabulsi. With furniture plonked on either side of a nearly empty central fish tank, the restaurant next door to the sweet shop feels like an afterthought – but it’s here where Dubaians can sample some authentic Palestinian home cooking. This is the sort of restaurant where you eat what you’re given, and you’ll more than likely be handed a plate of mansaf, a heaped pile of yellow pilaf rice with a scattering of pine nuts and a couple of rotund lumps of tenderly flaky lamb. The dish, which is Bedouin in origin and also the national food of Jordan, has a distinctive flavour from jameed, an aged, sun-dried yoghurt that sours the flavour of the dish.

For homely, hospitable eccentricity…

Special Ostadi Restaurant This long-standing Iranian restaurant has been the hectic, bustling and charming breadwinner for three generations of the same clan. As you eat, take in nearly 40 years’ worth of paraphernalia covering the walls. Look down and the glass-topped tables imprison a small fortune’s worth of foreign notes and coins – keep an eye out for Saddam-era Iraqi tender. The mixed grills of chicken marinated in saffron and chunks of thyme-scented mutton are dragged off piping hot skewers into fragrant, steaming rounds of bread brought in from a bakery across the road. It’s a hedonistic gastronomic experience when all the pomp of cutlery and presentation has been thrown by the wayside to make room for pure, unadulterated glorious food.

For bargain-priced but brilliant curries…

Gazebo Gazebo’s lengthy menu focuses on dishes from Lucknow and Hyderabad, such as the excellent tawa masala, with chunks of succulent lobster stir-fried in a curry of spring onion, tomato and black pepper. The achari gosht is another winner; tender, juicy cubes of lamb fired up by a sauce of tamarind, fennel and sundried tomatoes. You’ll be wowed by the intensity of the flavours, the lingering warmth of the spicing, the tantalisingly fruity aromas on the nose, and the dazzling colours of the dishes. Unfortunately, the service isn’t great and you should expect lengthy waits, but it’s a clean, smart, functional and contemporary restaurant, with dark wood fittings, reddish-brown shades, a few Indian arts and crafts, and, most importantly, some of the city’s best Indian food.

For sampling Sri Lanka…

The Curry Leaf Although The Curry Leaf serves Chinese food, fish and chips and curry-meets-pasta fusion options, we suggest you stick to the authentic Sri Lankan goodness. Try the hoppers – rice flour pancakes with a fried egg in their centre, usually eaten with chilli sambol (a spicy side dish) – along with lumpries, a Dutch colonial dish of rice baked with boneless chicken, beef or lamb, fish cutlets, boiled egg, aubergine, and a delicious sweet onion sambol. Fish plays a large part in Sri Lanka’s cuisine – try the kiri maalu, kingfish cooked in a lightly spiced coconut sauce. Sri Lanka’s favourite dessert, watalappan, is strange but very satisfying; a custardy combo of coconut, jaggery (a type of sugar cane), eggs, milk, cardamom and cinnamon, served with ice cream.

Pars Iranian Restaurant At this alfresco eatery hidden behind the basketball courts by Satwa roundabout, you can throw off your shoes and spread out over the low seating to enjoy a spread of salads, breads, dips and kebabs under the stars. The dips can be scooped up on crispy, warm flatbreads and eaten with feta cheese and sabzi, the mixed fresh herbs that come with every Iranian meal. The kebabs are huge and marinaded to juicy perfection – try the lemony seafood platter of grilled hammour and juicy prawns, or the excellent beef option. Whatever you order, it’ll come with a mountain of rice and a grilled tomato. If the weather’s hot, cool down with some falooda, an icy, syrupy vermicelli-based dessert.

The Fish Basket In a city where many restaurants will happily strip you of Dhs200 (plus a cooking charge) for an overcooked slab of salmon, here you can feast like a king for Dhs50 per person. Diners can either choose their own fish from the market or be guided by the knowledgeable staff. Either way, eating out here is clean, cheap and guaranteed to hit the spot. Feast on fresh bread, salads and yoghurt dips, before getting stuck into a tray of grilled hammour, battered calamari, anchovies, some super fresh crab and a couple of stately king prawns. It’s not the place for a long lingering lunch, and it’s a disastrous choice for a date, but dirham for dirham, The Fish Basket destroys most of the opposition.

Pak Ghazi If you’ve ever wondered where all the taxi drivers are when you leave work, they’re probably in this Pakistani stop-off. Join them on the pleasant little outdoor terrace, and treat yourself to a simple salad, raita sauce and puffed naan breads alongside shammi kebabs as soft as a Dhs10 speeding fine. Then move onto a murky peshwari chicken karahi in a kitchen-battered steel pot. The chunks of curry-soaked meat depart easily from clunky bones onto splendidly pert basmati rice, where the rugged cauliflower and clustered potato of a lively aloo gobi are bunched in a snarl-up of spice. Finish with a cup of sweet and milky tea for the road.

For the city’s best Indonesian food…

Namking This Indonesian restaurant’s unimposing façade belies an elaborate interior with shimmering candles, dark wood and brightly coloured booths. A pre-appetiser of kimchi is strangely moreish, featuring tangy cucumber strips and alarmingly bright red stained cabbage. The pak bao cakes are sublimely sticky inside-out barbecued chicken snacks, while the gado gado with tofu and green vegetables is a fresh and colourful dish sprinkled with a glorious peanut dressing. An inexpensive and enjoyable place to eat, Namking is a rarity in Dubai – an independent restaurant with a seriously stylish finish and honest and tasty food.

Grand Abu Shakra Atkins dieters beware: the most popular lunchtime food in Egypt, koshari, contains enough carbohydrates to keep you sated for the next couple of decades, with lentils, pasta, chickpeas and deep-fried onion mixed up with huge quantities of rice. And if you’re feeling bold, or simply have the urge to pick up an entire animal with the palm of your hand and rip it to shreds with your teeth, go for the stuffed pigeon. Getting the meat off one of these crisp-brown former flyers involves a bit of a grapple – they’re mostly skin and bones, but when you gnaw your path through to the tiny bit of meat, you’ll find it invitingly rich and gamey. So while Egyptian food may not suit your carb-dodging health freak, it’s certainly a world of fun for your inner pigeon fancier.

Sidra Sidra’s mezze – freshly prepared each morning – is temptingly arranged behind the first counter, while warm, small and fluffy bread is baked in the corner, near where kebabs are grilled to perfection. On Sidra’s terrace overlooking Dhiyafah Road you can sit down to bowls of hummos beiruti (blended with onions, garlic and herbs), a fattoush low on oil and high on fresh, crisp greens, and a zaatar salad, with strands of tangy, potent thyme and chopped olives. The food’s usually fantastic, but the mezze chef is prone to drizzling his food in tons of oil, so if you want to eat healthily it’s best to speak out at the time of ordering. And it’s perfect for night owls – Sidra’s open 24 hours.

سمعت من منفاي الاختياري ان جريدة الصباح في العراق قد اصدرت ملحقا" يتضمن سردأ لانجازات حكومة المالكي بمناسبة حلول الذكرى السنوية لتوليها مقاليد الامور في البلاد، ورغم اني غادرت البلاد منذ اكثر من شهر الا انني اعتقد انني عاصرت هذه الحكومة مدة كافية لكي اعبر عن شعوري بمنجزاتها !

سيسأل احدهم و ماهو شعورك ؟ اجيبه واقول :هوشعور أي مواطن عراقي (تتذكرون هاي الجملة مو تمام) يعيش متسكعا" في شوارع عمان ودمشق بعد ان ترك وطنه هربا" من تراكم المنجزات التي انهالت علينا الى درجة ان البشر اصبحوا يخافون من المشي في شوارع بغداد لئلا يدوسوا على منجز ، بل اضطروا الى الرحيل عن بيوتهم لانها ازدحمت بالمنجزات بحيث لم يعد لهم مكان كاف للاختلاء بنسوانهم !

منجزات ؟ ولكم صدك جذب ؟ ماذا قدمتم لابسط مواطن قنوع لا يبغي من الحياة الا اللقمة وفراش ينام عليه وسقف يحتمي به هو واطفاله ؟ لا امان ...لا خدمات ...لا صحة ...لا كهرباء ...لا وقود ،وجاهزون على الدوام لالقاء اللوم على الارهاب وعلى االصداميين والتكفيريين ؟ فما هي المنجزات التي لا تكفيها صفحات الجريدة فتحتاج الى ملحق ؟

هل نعيد نفس اللغوة كل مرة ؟قتل وذبح وتشريد وانهيار تدريجي للاخلاق والذمة ،ارهاب ورعب وتهجير وتهديد حتى اصبح مشردونا ولاجئونا اكثر من تعداد الشعب الفلسطيني رغم عدم وجود يهود ولا صهاينة من الذين لا نمل من شتمهم ليل نهار ، مع انهم لا يقتلون في عام كامل ما يقتل من العراقيين خلال اسبوع في عهد حكومة المنجزات .

لقد التقيت خلال شهرمن اللف والدوران في شوارع الغربة بحثا" عن وظيفة ارسل منها كم فلس لعائلتي الغارقة بالمنجزات باكثر من 20 طبيبا" اختصاصيا"مثلي لا عمل لهم الا ملأ الاف الاستمارات كل يوم وتقديمها الى المستشفيات والمستوصفات والمراكز الصحية او ارسالها الى الامارات وعمان ( فد يوم راح يدزوها حتى للصومال) او التزاحم امام المنظمات الانسانية عسى ان يجدوا سبيلا" لانقاذ انفسهم من الموت جوعا" .تعرفت على طبيب سني قتلت مليشيات وزارة الداخلية اخاه بعد اختطافه نهارا" جهارا" ودفع 3 دفاتر بالتمام والكمال من اجل اطلاق سراحه فكانت النتيجة القاء جثته في مزابل الرستمية، وطبيب شيعي شاء حظه العاثر ان يعمل في مستشفى النعمان فلاحقته سيارة بها 3 مجاهدين من فيلق عمر واطلقوا عليه الرصاص فنجا باعجوبة بعد ان اخترقت رصاصة رئته اليمنى ،وطبيب مسيحي يسكن الدورة الصقوا له ورقة على باب عيادته تطلب منه ان (يعدل عن شركه و يهتدي الى دين الحق ) وبعد ذلك كان عليه ان يزوج شقيقته الى احد مخبولي القاعدة من الذين تعف النفس عن شم رائحة لحيته القذرة .

قصص لا تنتهي كل منها تحكي مأساة اهم شريحة من علماء العراق تم كنسهم بالارهاب الى خارج البلاد ثم الانتقام منهم بدعوى انهم انانيون لا يفكرون بمصلحة المواطن ورايحين للخارج يكرفون فلوس ،باعتبار ان دول الجوار لا تصدق ان ترى طبيب عراقي حتى يناوشوه كونية دولارات .

والمهزلة ان حكومة المنجزات تفعل كل ما بوسعها للانتقام من كل طبيب نفذ بجلده وانقذ حياته وكانها تتحسف على افلاته من منجزاتها صحيحا" معافى ،فامرت بمنع ترويج معاملات التقاعد لمن غادر البلاد مضطرا"حتى من كانت لديه اكثر من 25 سنة من الخدمة بحجة المحافظة على ثروة العراق من العلماء !(( خوش ...تنكة)) ، وخلي عوائلنا الباقية بالعراق تاكل كيك ، على رأي ماري انطوانيت !

هسة التقاعد جزنا منا وعفناه لصولاغ ، عوفونا انتو نشتغل بشهاداتنا !

اخاف ما ترضون ؟

لقد منعت كليات الطب من تسليم الشهادات الجامعية لخريجيها ،حتى الذين قضوا نصف عمرهم في خدمة الدولة والمواطنين ويريدون ان يقضوا ما تبقى من عمرهم بعيدا" عن المنجزات والعلس ،فحاربت الاطباء في لقمة عيشهم ، فبماذا تختلفون عن صدام حسين مبتدع سياسة تحقير الطبيب (وكل عالم او مفكر كان يشعر بالنقص ازاءه) والذي كان يصر على اصدار عقوبات الاطباء الادارية باسم مجلس قوادة الثورة امعانا" في اذلالهم وتعريفهم انهم تحت قندرة القائد ،فجاءت من بعده حكومتكم الانجازية لتكمل الرسالة وتستلم الراية ، ويكفي تسليم مسؤولية وزارة الصحة لاشخاص لم يعرف عنهم اية كفاءة سوى انهم من التيار الصدري فحولوا مقر الوزارة الى حسينية وكل يوم الموظفين عايفين شغلهم للاحتفال بميلاد فلان ووفاة علان على طريقة ها حبيبي ان صح التعبير ، وها هي الوزارة دون وزير منذاكثر من شهر دون ان يتغير شي في ادائها ليكون ذلك دليلا" دامغا" على مدى الاهتمام بصحة المواطن في عهد حكومة الوحدة الوطنية (اخوان رجاءا" بلا ضحك) ،وتذكروا ان عمامة واحدة تسوى ميت طبيب في نظر الحكومة ، اذ ماذا ينفع الانسان لو ربح صحته وعقله وخسر السيد ،ان صح التعبير!

....لا والكاتلني تصريحات بعض المسؤولين الانجازيين التي تحث ذوي الاختصاصات العلمية من العراقيين المغتربين للعودة والمساهمة في بناء ... العراق الجديد!

الظاهر الجماعة خلصت فلوسهم وماكو بعد احد يخطفوه حتى يسترزقون ! فالشفط واللفط يبين ما راح يدوم لان جماعة بوش طلعت روحهم من هذولة اللملوم ويمكن ان يطيروهم في اي لحظة ،ورغم اني لا اعتقد ان احدا" سيتاسف على رحيل اي منهم ،لكن ما اتمناه ومن موقع التعصب لربعي الاطباء ان لا يفكروا بتبديل الزميل الدكتور رئيس مجلس النواب ( اللي بيض وجهنا كدام العربنجية )، فبعد ما حدث من سرقة للآثار العراقية ... لا نريد ان نخسر ايضا" هذا التحفة!
